Nursing Students' Experience in PBL£­Based Critical Care Nursing Simulation Practice

Abstract
Purpose : This study is a qualitative study which applied a phenomenological research method to the PBL based simulation practice for the patients under critical care experienced by nursing students in a simulation practice environment.

Method : For these subjects, a total of 7 weeks were spent with 2 weeks for each case. The data were analyzed by using Van Kaam¡¯s phenomenological research method.

Result : As a result of analyzing the PBL based simulation practice for the patients under critical care experienced by nursing students, 20 sub topics, 9 topics, and 3 categories were derived based on the total of 64 main statements. Each of the 3 categories was defined as the burden for unfamiliar teaching method, adaptation to the PBL based classes, and confidence in the ability to perform clinical nursing. Examining each category, the students at the start of the practice had difficulties since they felt awkward and given their fear and burden of new teaching method. However, as the classes progressed, flexible interactions among the members were achieved, and they were able to adapt to the PBL based classes. Furthermore, it turned out that they experienced an expansion of theoretical knowledge and improved their confidence in their ability to perform clinical nursing.

Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, it would be used as the basic data for maximizing the positive effects examined and validated in the previous studies, and for planning the simulation learning strategies applying various teaching methods in the future by adequately identifying and understanding the experiences of the students who engaged in the simulation practice classes.
